Serpent: Tempter or Teacher?

Organized by Jared Clark

Ritual Type: Viewpoint Hypothesis
Tags: Theology, Evil, Wisdom, Growth

Description:
The serpent is painted as the great deceiver — a tempter leading humanity astray. But could temptation itself also serve as a teacher, a necessary complement to good that awakens discernment and wisdom? If so, the serpent is not merely an enemy but also a catalyst for moral growth.

In this Viewpoint Hypothesis dialogue, we will:

  1. Share Viewpoints – Was the serpent only evil, or did its temptation serve a teaching role?

  2. Mirror & Clarify – Listen for the assumptions behind how we understand good and evil.

  3. Explore as Hypotheses – If the serpent was a tempter, does life’s purpose rest in resisting evil and proving loyalty? If temptation is also a teacher, does our purpose include learning wisdom through wrestling with desire, opposition, and paradox?

  4. Closing Reflection – Each participant names how this reframes their view of temptation in life’s journey.
